🔥 The MAIN benefit: Much faster charging

  • 30A charger → ~360W output
  • 50A charger → ~700W output

👉 That’s basically almost double the charging power

Real example:

  • 100Ah lithium battery
    • 30A charger → ~3–4 hours (ideal conditions)
    • 50A charger → ~2 hours

👉 Big difference if you’re driving short distances

🔋 Benefit #2: Better for bigger battery banks

If you run:

  • 2 × 100Ah lithium (200Ah bank)
  • Fridge + fish finder + trolling motor

👉 A 30A charger can feel underpowered

A 50A charger:

  • Keeps up with usage
  • Actually recharges while you drive, not just “maintains”

🚙 Benefit #3: Short trips / stop-start driving

This is a big one in real life:

  • School runs
  • Fishing spots close by
  • Launch → fish → move → fish

👉 With 30A:

  • You often don’t fully recharge

👉 With 50A:

  • You recover battery much faster between stops

⚡ Benefit #4: Lithium batteries LOVE higher charge current

Lithium (LiFePO4):

  • Can safely take high current (unlike lead acid)
  • Charges fastest when pushed harder

👉 A 50A charger uses lithium’s strength properly

⚠️ BUT — here’s the catch (very important)

1. Alternator load

A 50A charger pulls a lot more from your vehicle:

  • 30A charger input ≈ ~35–40A draw
  • 50A charger input ≈ ~55–60A draw

👉 You must have:

  • A decent alternator
  • Not already overloaded with accessories

(Modern bakkies are usually fine, small cars can struggle)

2. Wiring requirements

50A means:

  • Thicker cables (very important)
  • Bigger fuses
  • Better connections

👉 Otherwise you get heat + voltage drop

3. Cost

  • 50A units are noticeably more expensive
  • But often worth it if you’re running lithium

⚖️ When 30A is enough

Stick with 30A if:

  • Single 100Ah battery
  • Light loads (fish finder, lights)
  • Long drives between uses

🚀 When 50A is the better move

Go 50A if:

  • 2 batteries (like you mentioned earlier)
  • Lithium setup
  • Fridge + electronics + trolling motor
  • Short trips / frequent stops

🧠 Simple way to decide

  • Battery capacity ÷ 3 = ideal charge current

Examples:

  • 100Ah → ~30A ✅
  • 200Ah → ~60A → 50A is much better
  • 300Ah → you’d want even more or dual chargers

💡 Bottom line

  • 50A = faster, more efficient, better for lithium systems
  • 30A = fine for smaller, simpler setups

👉 In your case (multiple lithium batteries):
50A is usually the smarter long-term choice
