What to Look for in a SUP Paddle (2025 Buyers Guide)

What to Look for in a SUP Paddle (2025 Buyers Guide)

What to look for in a SUP Paddle

We get a lot of question on this topic from customers, so we decided to shed some light on this element of stand up paddle boarding. Choosing the right SUP Paddle is essential for maximising your performance on the water. The perfect paddle enhances power, control, and balance, making it easier to catch waves and manoeuvre with precision. In this 2025 Buying Guide, we’ll break down what to look for in a SUP paddle—from blade size and shape to materials and handle design—so you can make an informed choice and enjoy every session to the fullest.

Here are the main criteria to consider when looking for a SUP Paddle:

Feature

Why It Matters

Blade size & shape You want a blade that’s fairly wide / short. That gives more instant power to punch through white water, pop through waves, and pull back when needed. Long or narrow blades give better glide but less power / bite.
Material / stiffness Stiff blades and shafts (carbon, or carbon/fibreglass) are more efficient, less flex, so less wasted energy. Good for quick, powerful strokes. But full carbon tends to be pricier and can be less durable in abuse.
Weight Lighter paddles are easier to handle in surf—less fatigue and quicker recovery between strokes.
Length adjustability Surf breaks sometimes need you to shorten the paddle for manoeuvres; having adjustable shaft length (2- or 3-piece) is useful, especially if sharing gear or travelling. But fixed length or one-piece shafts give simpler, more direct feel.
Handle / grip There are T-handles, S-handles etc.; comfort and grip is important when you’re taking hits from waves. Foam or ergonomic handles help.
Durability Since surf can bash the paddle blade on board rails, reef, etc., you want good edge protection, strong materials. Composite or reinforced blades, good laminates.

Surf paddles are a trade-off: you sacrifice some glide in favour of power and control.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right SUP paddle comes down to understanding your needs and preferences. Consider blade shape, materials, weight, and handle design to find a paddle that enhances efficiency, comfort, and performance on the water. With the right choice, every paddling session becomes easier, more enjoyable, and better suited to your style.
