Step by Step Guide: Use Garmin Connect + Strava Route Sync
Whether you’re training for an event, exploring new routes, or following a favourite trail, having your Strava routes available directly on your Garmin watch makes navigation simple and stress-free. In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to download a GPX file from your Strava account and load it onto your Garmin watch, using both Garmin Connect and direct file transfer methods. Follow along to ensure your routes are always ready to go before you head out.
Best if you want routes to sync automatically.
Step 1: Get the GPX from Strava
- Log in to Strava on a computer (this works best on desktop)
- Go to Dashboard → My Routes
- Click the route you want
- Click the three dots (⋯) → Export GPX
- The GPX file will download to your computer
Step 2: Upload GPX to Garmin Connect
- Go to https://connect.garmin.com
- Click Training → Courses
- Click Create Course → Import
- Upload the GPX file
- Save the course
Step 3: Sync to Your Garmin Watch
- Open the Garmin Connect app on your phone
- Make sure your watch is connected
- Sync the watch
The route will now appear on your watch under:
Navigation / Courses / Training → Courses
(depending on model)
Having your Strava routes loaded onto your Garmin watch gives you the confidence to focus on your activity instead of worrying about navigation. Whether you choose to sync routes through Garmin Connect or manually upload GPX files, both methods are quick and reliable once set up. By taking a few minutes to prepare your routes in advance, you’ll enjoy smoother sessions, better pacing, and the freedom to explore new trails and waterways with your Garmin guiding the way.
