Garmin inReach Mini Setup Guide for South Africa: New and Used Units

Garmin inReach Mini Setup Guide for South Africa: New and Used Units

Introduction

A Garmin inReach can be an extremely valuable safety and communication device for kayak anglers, boaters, hikers, hunters, overlanders and anyone travelling beyond normal mobile-phone coverage.

Unlike an ordinary handheld GPS, an inReach uses the Iridium satellite network to send and receive messages, share a location and initiate an SOS. It does not need a South African SIM card or nearby cellphone tower, but it does require an active Garmin inReach subscription for its satellite communication and SOS functions.

This guide deals specifically with the original Garmin inReach Mini, sometimes informally called the Mini 1. The setup process differs slightly from the newer inReach Mini 2, particularly in terms of the mobile app and menu structure.

Identifying the Original Garmin inReach Mini

The unit pictured in the image of this article is the original Garmin inReach Mini, Garmin part number 010-01879-00. This is merely for the purpose of the article, but new models will have a few extra features of course.

Its main features include:

  • Two-way satellite text messaging
  • Interactive SOS communication
  • Location sharing and tracking
  • Basic GPS navigation
  • Bluetooth connection to a mobile phone
  • Iridium global satellite coverage
  • IPX7 water rating
  • Compact 100-gram body
  • Up to approximately 90 hours of battery life under Garmin’s specified tracking conditions

Although it has now been replaced by newer inReach models, the original Mini remains a useful and capable satellite communicator when it is correctly activated and configured.

What You Need Before Starting

Before setting up the inReach Mini, make sure you have:

  • The inReach Mini and a suitable USB charging cable
  • A fully charged battery
  • A smartphone or tablet with internet access
  • An email address
  • A Garmin account
  • A valid payment method
  • The unit’s IMEI number and authorisation code
  • Access to an open outdoor area with a clear view of the sky

The device information, including the IMEI number, can be viewed on the Mini under:

Setup → About This Device

The IMEI may also appear on the original packaging or accompanying documentation.

Setting Up a Brand-New Garmin inReach Mini

Step 1: Charge the Device

Fully charge the inReach before beginning activation.

Because this unit may be used around salt water, always make sure the USB port and surrounding area are completely dry before connecting the charging cable. Garmin specifically warns that the port should be thoroughly dried to help prevent corrosion.

Step 2: Create a Garmin inReach Account

For the original inReach Mini, Garmin’s official activation process begins through the Garmin Explore website.

Create an account and select an inReach satellite subscription plan. The website will guide the customer through entering the device information and payment details.

The satellite service must be activated before the customer can use:

  • Two-way satellite messages
  • Location tracking sent through the satellite network
  • Weather requests
  • Interactive SOS communication

The Mini can still acquire a normal GPS position without a subscription, but the satellite communication features require an active plan.

Step 3: Switch On the Mini

Press the Power button to switch on the device.

Follow the on-screen instructions. The setup may ask for details such as:

  • Language
  • Time format
  • Measurement units
  • Activation information

For a South African customer, a 24-hour time format and metric measurements will normally be the most practical choices.

Step 4: Complete Satellite Activation Outdoors

When prompted, take the inReach outside to an open area with a clear view of the sky.

Avoid trying to activate it:

  • Inside a building
  • Under a metal roof
  • Inside a vehicle
  • Under dense trees
  • Close to tall buildings or cliffs

The device must communicate with the Iridium satellite network to complete activation. Garmin notes that the unit requires a clear view of the sky and may continue trying to transmit until it obtains a suitable satellite connection.

Allow enough time for the process. A first activation can take longer than a normal message transmission.

Which Mobile App Does the Original Mini Use?

This is an important distinction.

The original inReach Mini officially uses the Garmin Earthmate app for Bluetooth pairing and mobile messaging. The newer Mini 2 uses Garmin Explore and Garmin Messenger more extensively, but the original Mini’s owner’s manual specifically directs users to install Earthmate.

To pair the original Mini:

  1. Install and open the Earthmate app on the phone.
  2. Keep the phone and Mini within approximately three metres of each other.
  3. On the Mini, select:

Setup → Bluetooth → Pair Device

  4. Follow the instructions in Earthmate.

Once paired, the devices should reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is enabled and they are within range.

The phone does not provide the satellite connection. The Mini itself communicates with the satellite network. The app simply gives the user a larger and easier interface for typing messages, viewing maps and managing information.

Configure the Device Before Taking It Offshore

Activation alone is not enough. The customer should properly configure and test the unit before relying on it.

Add Emergency Information

Make sure the Garmin account contains accurate information such as:

  • Full name
  • Emergency contacts
  • Mobile numbers
  • Relevant medical conditions
  • Allergies
  • Medication
  • Intended activity
  • Vessel, kayak or vehicle details where appropriate

This information may help emergency coordinators understand the situation during an SOS.

Add Contacts

Add the people who may need to receive:

  • Check-in messages
  • Trip progress
  • Delayed-return notices
  • Emergency-related communication

Include the full international format for South African mobile numbers where required, normally using +27 and removing the first zero.

For example:

082 123 4567 becomes +27 82 123 4567.

Create Check-In or Preset Messages

The original inReach Mini allows predefined messages and recipients to be configured through the Garmin Explore web account.

Useful examples for offshore anglers include:

  • “I have launched safely.”
  • “Everything is okay. This is my current position.”
  • “I am heading back to shore.”
  • “I am delayed but do not require assistance.”
  • “Please arrange assistance at the launch site.”

Keep the messages clear and avoid wording that might be mistaken for an emergency.

Garmin notes that preset messages are configured through the Garmin Explore website.

Perform a Test

Never wait for an emergency to discover that the device has not been properly activated.

Before the first trip:

  1. Take the unit outside.
  2. Make sure it has a clear view of the sky.
  3. Confirm that it obtains a GPS position.
  4. Send an ordinary test or check-in message.
  5. Confirm that the intended recipient receives it.
  6. Ask the recipient to reply.
  7. Confirm that the reply arrives on the Mini.
  8. Check that the location link is correct.

Do not press the SOS button merely to test the unit unless following an authorised Garmin testing procedure.

Setting Up a Second-Hand Garmin inReach Mini

A used unit requires more than simply switching it on and changing the name.

There are two separate matters that must be addressed:

  1. The previous owner’s satellite service and account
  2. The personal information and settings stored on the device

A factory reset clears information from the Mini, but it does not replace the need for the previous owner to cancel or transfer their inReach service correctly.

Garmin recommends that a seller cancel the existing service or transfer it to another compatible device and then factory-reset the inReach before handing it to the new owner. The new owner must create a separate account using their own information.

What the Previous Owner Must Do

Before selling or giving away the Mini, the previous owner should:

  1. Log into their Garmin inReach account.
  2. Cancel the active satellite service or transfer it to another inReach device.
  3. Confirm that any outstanding account obligations have been dealt with.
  4. Sync any information they wish to retain.
  5. Factory-reset the Mini.
  6. Remove the previous Bluetooth pairing from their phone.

Changing the email address on the old account is not the correct way to transfer ownership. Garmin recommends cancelling the service and allowing the new owner to create their own account.

The new buyer should not rely on the seller’s existing subscription, emergency contacts or personal account.

Factory-Resetting the Original inReach Mini

On the original Mini, the correct menu path is:

Setup → Recovery Options → Restore Defaults

Garmin states that this restores the device to its factory-default settings and deletes user-entered information.

The reset can remove locally stored information such as:

  • Messages
  • Contacts
  • Waypoints
  • Routes
  • Tracking information
  • Bluetooth pairings
  • User preferences

The buyer should therefore only perform the reset after the seller has saved anything they wish to retain.

A Soft Reset Is Not the Same as a Factory Reset

If the Mini freezes or stops responding, a soft reset can be performed without deleting information.

On the original Mini:

  1. Hold the Cancel and Power buttons until the device switches off.
  2. Press and hold Power to switch it on again.

This process does not erase the settings or user data.

Use the soft reset for a frozen unit. Use Restore Defaults when preparing the device for a new owner or completely reconfiguring it.

Setting Up the Used Mini Under the New Owner

Once the seller has cancelled or transferred their service and the device has been reset:

  1. Fully charge the Mini.
  2. Create a new Garmin account in the buyer’s own name.
  3. Select a new inReach subscription.
  4. Enter the Mini’s IMEI and authorisation information.
  5. Switch on the Mini.
  6. Follow the activation prompts.
  7. Take it outdoors with a clear view of the sky.
  8. Allow it to complete satellite activation.
  9. Install Earthmate on the new owner’s phone.
  10. Pair through:

Setup → Bluetooth → Pair Device

  1. Add the new emergency contacts and personal information.
  2. Configure messages and recipients.
  3. Perform a full message and reply test.

The new owner should not assume that the old owner’s messages, contacts or emergency profile remain suitable.

What Happens if the Used Unit Cannot Be Activated?

If activation reports that the device is still associated with another account or service, the most effective solution is usually to contact the seller.

Ask the previous owner to:

  • Log into the correct Garmin inReach account
  • Cancel or transfer the service
  • Complete the ownership-transfer preparation
  • Confirm that the device is ready for a new activation

When buying a used unit privately, it is best to complete this check before handing over payment.

Where the previous owner cannot be contacted, the customer should contact Garmin Support and provide whatever legitimate proof of purchase is available. Garmin will determine what assistance can be provided. A factory reset by itself should not be treated as proof of ownership.

Garmin inReach Subscription Costs in South Africa

Garmin’s current consumer-plan structure includes:

  • Enabled
  • Essential
  • Standard
  • Premium

The plans are generally charged in US dollars, with the customer’s South African bank converting the amount to rand. The final amount can therefore vary according to:

  • The USD/ZAR exchange rate
  • Foreign-currency transaction fees
  • Card-provider charges
  • Tax treatment
  • Future Garmin price changes

Garmin states that its current consumer options are month-to-month and require only a 30-day commitment. Customers can move between active plan levels according to their communication and tracking requirements.

Approximate monthly costs

Using an exchange rate of roughly R16.30 to US$1, the approximate amounts are:

Plan USD monthly price Approximate rand value
Enabled US$7.99 About R130
Essential US$14.99 About R245
Standard US$29.99 About R490
Premium US$49.99 About R815

These figures are approximate and should not be advertised as fixed South African retail prices.

The customer should always confirm the actual amount shown by Garmin during activation.

Activation Fee

A new activation may attract an activation fee of approximately US$39.99, which would be around R650 at the exchange rate used above.

This fee may also become relevant if a customer completely cancels the service and later activates it again. Garmin’s newer Enabled plan was introduced partly to allow a device to remain active at a lower monthly cost rather than cancelling and paying another activation charge later.

Garmin fees and plan conditions can change, so customers should check the final activation screen before committing.

Which Plan Is Best for a South African Jetski, Small Offshore Boat or Kayak Angler?

The ideal plan depends on how often the device will be used and how many messages or tracking points will be sent.

Enabled

Best suited to someone who mainly wants to keep the device active for SOS availability and is comfortable paying separately for most other communication.

This may suit an occasional user who sends very few messages.

Essential

For many recreational kayak anglers, boaters, hikers and overlanders, Essential is likely to be the most practical starting point.

It offers a balance between monthly cost and ordinary communication allowances.

Standard

More suitable for customers who:

  • Travel regularly
  • Send frequent messages
  • Use tracking more extensively
  • Spend more time outside mobile coverage

Premium

Intended for heavy users who need a significantly larger communication and tracking allowance.

Before choosing a plan, examine the included allowances and the out-of-bundle charges rather than comparing only the monthly fee.

Important Safety Considerations for Offshore Use

An inReach is an extremely useful additional safety tool, but it should not replace the normal marine safety equipment required for the activity.

For offshore kayak or small-boat use, it should be used alongside appropriate equipment such as:

  • A suitable personal flotation device
  • VHF marine radio where practical
  • Mobile phone in a waterproof case
  • Signalling devices
  • Flares where appropriate
  • Whistle
  • Navigation equipment
  • Emergency contact and float plan
  • Suitable clothing and exposure protection

The inReach must have a clear enough view of the sky to communicate effectively.

Do not bury it inside a hatch, metal console or heavily obstructed storage compartment. Garmin recommends positioning the device where it has a clear view of the sky, such as on the upper body or an exposed mounting point.

On a kayak, secure it with a tether in a position where it can still be reached after a capsize.

Protecting the inReach Mini in a Marine Environment

The original Mini is rated IPX7, which means it is designed to withstand incidental immersion in up to one metre of water for up to 30 minutes under test conditions. It should not be treated as permanently waterproof or left exposed unnecessarily.

After saltwater exposure:

  1. Rinse the exterior carefully with fresh water.
  2. Do not force water into the charging port.
  3. Dry it thoroughly.
  4. Open the USB weather cover only once the surrounding area is dry.
  5. Inspect for salt deposits or corrosion.
  6. Charge only when completely dry.

A small waterproof pouch can provide additional protection, but make sure the pouch does not prevent access to the SOS control or seriously obstruct the satellite view.

Used inReach Mini Buyer’s Checklist

Before paying for a second-hand unit, confirm the following:

  • The Mini powers on normally.
  • The display is readable.
  • All buttons operate correctly.
  • The SOS cover is present and undamaged.
  • The USB port is clean and free of corrosion.
  • The battery accepts and retains a charge.
  • The IMEI number is available.
  • The seller can prove legitimate ownership.
  • The seller has cancelled or transferred the active inReach service.
  • The device can be factory-reset.
  • The new owner can begin activation under their own Garmin account.

The safest approach is to ask the seller to complete the account steps while the buyer is present.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Garmin inReach need a SIM card in South Africa?

No. It communicates through the Iridium satellite network rather than a South African cellphone network.

The connected smartphone may use mobile data or Wi-Fi for account management, map downloads and app functions, but satellite messaging is handled by the inReach itself.

Will it work offshore in South Africa?

Yes, provided the unit has an active subscription and a sufficiently clear view of the sky.

It is specifically useful in areas where ordinary mobile-phone coverage is unreliable or unavailable.

Can it send messages to a normal cellphone?

Yes. The inReach can send messages to compatible SMS numbers, email addresses and other inReach users. Garmin states that messages can include the sender’s location details.

Recipients should understand how to reply before the user departs.

Does the SOS work without a subscription?

No. An active inReach subscription is required for satellite messaging and interactive SOS services.

Can I simply factory-reset a used unit and activate it?

Not always.

The seller should first cancel or transfer their satellite service and prepare the device for ownership transfer. The factory reset then removes the previous user’s locally stored information.

Can the old subscription be transferred to the new owner?

The preferred process is for the previous owner to cancel their service and for the new owner to create their own account and subscription. Garmin specifically recommends separate account ownership rather than merely changing the old account’s email address.

Which app should be used with the original Mini?

The official owner’s manual specifies the Garmin Earthmate app for Bluetooth pairing.

Do not automatically follow Mini 2 instructions, because the newer model uses a different app and menu arrangement.

Can the Mini be tested without triggering an emergency?

Yes. Send an ordinary check-in or text message and confirm that it is received and answered.

Do not press SOS merely as a general test.

Final Advice

The Garmin inReach Mini can be a valuable safety tool for South African outdoor users, particularly when travelling or fishing beyond dependable cellphone coverage.

The process is straightforward with a new unit:

  1. Create an account.
  2. Select a subscription.
  3. Activate outdoors.
  4. Pair with Earthmate.
  5. Configure contacts and messages.
  6. Test it before departure.

With a second-hand unit, there is one additional but essential requirement:

The previous owner must properly cancel or transfer their Garmin inReach service before the new owner activates the device under a separate account.

A factory reset clears the previous user’s information, but it should form part of the ownership-transfer process rather than being treated as the entire process.
